Change the Image Shown When Your Website Link Is Shared

How to get the preview image changed that appears when someone shares or texts a link to your WaveRez-built website.

Written by Amber Dudley

Overview

When someone shares a link to your website in a text message, Facebook Messenger, or social media, a preview card appears with an image, title, and description. Partners also call this the link preview, share image, social image, OpenGraph image, link thumbnail, the picture that shows when texting the link, or the Messenger preview. On partner websites built by WaveRez on WordPress, this image is set through the site's SEO plugin. The WaveRez support team updates it for you.

Prerequisites

  • This article applies to WordPress websites built by WaveRez. If your website was built on another platform, follow that platform's instructions for social sharing images.

  • Have the new image ready. A wide image works best for link previews.

Request a New Link Preview Image

Step 1 — Contact WaveRez support.

Step 2 — Send the image you want to use and tell us which page it is for, such as your Home page, or whether it should be the default for your whole site.

Step 3 — The WaveRez team updates the image and lets you know when it is done.

Most partners do not need a WordPress login, and WaveRez does not provide one by default. If you would like a WordPress login for your website, you can request one from WaveRez support.

Troubleshoot Link Preview Images

Symptom: The image was changed but the old one still shows when you text or share the link.

Cause and resolution: Facebook, Messenger, and texting apps cache link previews, so they may show the old image for a while after a change. Give it time. Previews already sent in past messages do not change.
